Eligibility

What are the vehicle registration requirements?
You must own your vehicle and register it before 125,000 miles. Vehicles that have a diesel engine, are more than 19 years old, have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of over 10,000 pounds or have been modified with equipment or parts that are not factory-original are not eligible to participate.
How old do I have to be to participate?
According to the Official Terms and Conditions, you must be at least 16 at the time you enroll your vehicle to participate in this Engine Guarantee.
My parents own my vehicle. Can I enroll?
No, only the owner or lessor of the vehicle can enroll in the Limited Engine Guarantee.
Can I enroll my leased vehicle?
Yes, leased vehicles may be enrolled in the program provided they meet the other eligibility requirements.
Are fleet vehicles allowed to participate?
Yes, fleet owners may enroll up to 20 vehicles.
I just purchased a vehicle that was enrolled in Valvoline's Limited Engine Guarantee. Is the vehicle still covered if I follow the terms and conditions?
Sorry, the guarantee is non-transferable. However, if the vehicle has 125,000 miles or less and meets remaining eligibility requirements, you may register the vehicle in your name.
My vehicle has more than 125,000 miles, but I have been using Valvoline motor oil regularly. Why isn't my vehicle eligible?
Good maintenance in the early life of a vehicle helps to protect the engine from significant damage later. Because we wanted to offer a Guarantee with minimal exclusions, we had to ensure that we could verify good vehicle maintenance, which includes regular oil changes with Valvoline motor oils, prior to 125,000 miles.
Why are diesel engines excluded?
Diesel engines have different maintenance requirements than gasoline engines. We have not yet developed a Guarantee program for diesel engines.
Can I enroll my 1990 model?
Vehicles up to 19 years old can participate. That means to enroll your vehicle during 2014 the vehicle must be a 1995 model or newer. To enroll in 2015, the vehicle must be a 1996 model or newer, and so on.
Why are vehicles excluded if they have been modified with equipment or parts that are not factory-original?
The program will not guarantee a vehicle that has been modified due to the unknown effect modifications could have on the engine's performance.
How many vehicles am I allowed to enroll in the Valvoline Limited Engine Guarantee?
You may enroll up to 20 vehicles per household. Each vehicle must be enrolled before 125,000 miles in order to qualify.
I live in Canada. Can I enroll?
Sorry, only residents in the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia are eligible.
I live in Puerto Rico. Can I enroll?
Sorry, U.S. territories are excluded.

Maintaining My Limited Engine Guarantee

What do I need to do to stay in the Limited Engine Guarantee program?
Once you've enrolled, change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles using the type of Valvoline oil required for the protection level you selected. We know you can't always change your oil at exactly 3,000 miles, so we allow a grace period of up to 1,000 miles. Enter your oil changes online within 90 days of when you had your oil changed and keep your receipts (copies accepted). Additional requirements can be found in the Terms and Conditions.
What happens if I go longer than 3,000 miles between oil changes?
We know you can't always change your oil at exactly 3,000 miles, so we allow a grace period of up to 1,000 miles. If you go longer than 4,000 to 5,999 miles between oil changes, this will count as an exception. If you do not change your oil within 6,000 miles, however, your vehicle no longer qualifies for the Limited Engine Guarantee.
How long can I wait after I have my oil changed to record my service online?
You must record your oil change service within 90 days of when you changed the oil or had the oil changed for you. If you record an oil change more than 90 days after it was done it will be accepted but will count as an exception to your vehicle guarantee. Please note that you only have three exceptions under the program. If you incur a fourth exception your vehicle is no longer covered under the Limited Engine Guarantee.
Do I have to keep receipts if I record my oil change online?
Yes. You must keep receipts (copies accepted) for all oil purchases, whether you change the oil yourself or you have it done by a service provider. However, if you are a customer of Valvoline Instant Oil Change, the records for your oil change services at VIOC will be automatically uploaded to your Limited Engine Guarantee records. If you expect to see your records posted online and don't, please contact us.
Can I change my Guarantee protection level?
You may upgrade your level of protection anytime prior to 125,000 miles. Simply go to the Vehicle Home Page and select "Change Guarantee". You may choose to lower the level of protection at any time.
What if I just had my oil changed, but I want to enroll in the guarantee at a higher level than the oil I just purchased?
No problem! When you enroll, you can enroll at any level, regardless of the oil you used at your most recent oil change. Simply use the oil required for the protection level you selected at future oil changes. The only oil changes that affect your eligibility are the ones done after you enroll your vehicle in the Limited Engine Guarantee.
If I make one mistake will it void my guarantee?
Small mistakes, or "exceptions," will not void your Limited Engine Guarantee. The program allows for three exceptions. On the fourth exception your vehicle no longer qualifies for the Limited Engine Guarantee. Some examples of small mistakes for which you can receive an exception include going more than 4,000 to 5,999 miles between oil changes; forgetting to record an oil change within 90 days; or using a lower type of motor oil (e.g., using Valvoline Conventional oil when you have enrolled in the synthetic 300,000-mile level of the Limited Engine Guarantee). However, if you go 6,000 miles or more between oil changes, you will void your Limited Engine Guarantee.
What is an exception?
Exceptions are small mistakes which include going more than 4,000 to 5,999 miles between oil changes; forgetting to record an oil change within 90 days; or using a lower type of motor oil (e.g., using Valvoline Conventional oil when you have enrolled in the synthetic 300,000-mile level of the Limited Engine Guarantee). You can accumulate three exceptions and still remain in the program. If you get a fourth exception, your vehicle will no longer be eligible for the Limited Engine Guarantee. However, if you go 6,000 miles or more between oil changes, you will void your Limited Engine Guarantee.
Is it okay if I get my oil changed at different service providers, and sometimes change the oil myself?
Yes! Always use the type of Valvoline oil for the level of the Limited Engine Guarantee in which your vehicle is enrolled. Keep your receipts and enter your oil changes online within 90 days of when you had the oil changed.
Do I have to change my oil filter every time I change the oil?
You must change the filter when you change the oil. That's because in addition to providing essential engine lubrication, oil also scrubs the inside of the engine clean and traps contaminants such as dirt in the filter, preventing contaminants from re-entering the oil and your engine. Over time, the filter can become full of contaminants and lose its effectiveness. Changing the oil and filter on a regular basis gives the engine a fresh transfusion for longer life and keeps you in compliance for the Limited Engine Guarantee.
What happens if I do not use the required type of oil required for the level I have selected in the Limited Engine Guarantee?
If the oil you use is from a lower level of the Limited Engine Guarantee, it will count as an exception. Remember, you are allowed three exceptions, and on the fourth exception your vehicle is no longer covered. It is okay if you use a higher level oil (e.g., if you use SynPower synthetic when you are enrolled in the Conventional level of the Limited Engine Guarantee).
What if I use a different viscosity grade of oil than what my vehicle manufacturer recommends?
You must use the viscosity grade (5W-30, 10W-30, etc.) recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. Consult your owner's manual for the required viscosity for your vehicle.
Is it okay if I use a higher level or type of Valvoline oil than what is specified in my guarantee level?
Yes. For example, if you enroll in the 225,000 mile Limited Engine Guarantee, and you use a full-synthetic oil, you still qualify for the 225,000 mile guarantee.
My vehicle has an oil indicator light. Shouldn't I use that as an indicator for when to change the oil?
To maintain the extra protection offered by the Limited Engine Guarantee, you must change your oil and filter every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, regardless of whether your vehicle is equipped with an oil indicator light.

Coverage under the Guarantee

What parts and costs are covered under the Guarantee?
The Limited Engine Guarantee covers most lubricated engine parts. These parts include pistons and rings, turbo bearings, cylinder linings or bores, oil pump, rods and rod bearings, valve stem and guides, cam shaft and bearings, crankshaft and bearings, valve lifters, rocker arms and pivots, distributor drive gear, and timing chain or gears or sprockets. Valvoline will cover the cost of labor and replacement parts (or replacement engine if necessary) to restore your engine to operation. However, this Limited Engine Guarantee does not cover parts related to electrical, fuel, computer engine management system, cooling system, air intake system, exhaust system, turbocharger or supercharger. Please go to Guarantee Details for complete details.
Who would do the repairs or replace the engine?
Typically we will work with you to find a qualified local repair shop to do the work. Valvoline may require that your vehicle be repaired by a certified repair facility and/or an ASE Certified Technician. Please go to Guarantee Details for complete details.
Why is there a waiting period of 18 months before I can make a claim?
Before we cover your car, we want you to develop a short history of proper engine maintenance. When you register for the Limited Engine Guarantee, we can help you by sending maintenance reminders and car care tips.

How to File a Claim

What qualifies as "engine failure" and what parts are covered?
A covered engine failure occurs when the engine will not run because of the failure of a lubricated engine part or component. Please see the Terms and Conditions for complete details. If your engine does not run because of problems with systems not protected by motor oil – for example, a malfunction of the electrical, fuel, computer engine management, cooling, air intake or exhaust systems -- then the failure is not an engine failure, and thus not covered by the Limited Engine Guarantee. Unless caused by a failure of the excluded systems above, examples of covered parts include: pistons and rings, turbo bearings, cylinder linings or bores, oil pump, rods and rod bearings, valve stem and guides, cam shaft and bearings, crankshaft and bearings, valve lifters, rocker arms and pivots, distributor drive gear, and timing chain or gears or sprockets. Examples of parts not covered include: parts related to electrical, fuel, computer engine management system, cooling system, air intake system, exhaust system, turbocharger or supercharger.
Why is there a waiting period of 18 months before I can file a claim?
Before we cover your car, we want you to develop a short history of proper engine maintenance. When you register for the Limited Engine Guarantee, we can help you by sending maintenance reminders and car care tips.
If my engine fails, what is the process for filing a claim?
If your engine fails, you may contact Valvoline Engine Guarantee Customer Service in one of two ways: Call 1-877-274-6703 or on your Vehicle Home Page, simply click "Submit an Engine Guarantee Claim".
If my engine fails, will I be required to prove that it was Valvoline motor oil that caused the failure?
No. Unlike other so-called guarantees, we believe so strongly in the quality of our products that we will cover engine failures even if they are not caused by our product.
Why is the maximum payout for repairs $5,000?
The average cost of repairing an engine failure is less than $3,000. Some vehicles cost more and others cost less. We've chosen the $5,000 limit because it will more than cover most repairs.
What is not covered under the Limited Engine Guarantee program?
Basically any engine failure that did not happen during your normal everyday use of the vehicle. Most of this is pretty obvious, but our lawyers told us we had to give you a detailed list. Engine failures that are caused by the following circumstances are not covered: collision or other accident; theft; vandalism; riot; explosion; earthquake; lightning; freezing; overheating; internal or external fire; water or flood damage (including prior flood damage); negligent, reckless, knowing or intentional damage; timing belt failure; improper service or maintenance; defect attributable to the vehicle manufacturer; improper installation of any part; coolant or external contamination; or the failure to keep the motor oil and engine coolant at levels prescribed by the manufacturer.

About Switching Oil Types

Why does Valvoline recommend changing oil every 3,000 miles?
Most consumers (more than 80% of drivers, according to a State of California study) drive under what is considered severe driving conditions (stop and go, short trips, towing, or very hot or very cold temperatures). Auto manufacturers' oil change interval recommendations are dramatically shorter for severe driving conditions, with the majority recommending 3,750 miles or less and with 3,000 miles being the most common recommendation. Both oil and oil filters have less of a useful life under severe conditions due to increased dirt and other contaminants. So, changing the oil and filter every 3,000 miles is the best way to ensure engine health.
Is it okay to switch to Valvoline motor oil if I have been using another brand?
Yes! Valvoline motor oils meet or exceed vehicle manufacturer specifications.
Is switching types of motor oil (conventional, synthetic, etc.) harmful to my engine?
Conventional, synthetic blend, synthetic and high mileage oils are compatible and switching from conventional to synthetic or vice versa will not harm your engine, unless your vehicle manufacturer requires a full synthetic oil. In that case, you must use a synthetic oil; use of a non-synthetic oil will void the guarantee.
What is the difference between MaxLife Synthetic Blend motor oil and MaxLife Synthetic oil?
MaxLife Synthetic Blend is formulated with a mix of synthetic and conventional base oils along with unique high performance additives to improve performance versus conventional motor oils. MaxLife synthetic motor oil is a full synthetic oil with even higher performance components than MaxLife Synthetic Blend to offer the highest level of protection available for high mileage engines.

For California Residents Only

I live in California; do I need to register online?
No, by state law you are not required to register online. But online registration makes it easy to maintain your records. Plus, with online registration, you'll receive oil change reminders via email to help you maintain your Guarantee.
How do I participate if I live in California and do not want to register online?
You must follow the terms and conditions of the Limited Engine Guarantee. For example, you must change oil regularly and keep all maintenance related receipts. See the full terms and conditions on the Guarantee Details page for a comprehensive discussion of all requirements.
What happens if I am enrolled in the Guarantee while living in California, and then move to another state? Will I be required to start tracking my purchases online?
If you do not complete on line registration for the program while you live in California, you will not be required to register once you leave. However, you will have to provide proof of residency in California at the time you began participating in the program along with all other proof required to make a claim.

SMS Questions

How do I stop receiving messages or content on my phone?
Just text VSTOP to the Shortcode from the content source. To stop a service...
  • First, look for a phone number on your phone bill or on one of the messages that you don't want. Most often, this is a 5-digit number.
  • From your phone, create a new text message with only the word VSTOP.
  • Enter the phone number from the unwanted message.
  • Send the message.
Within 24 hours, the sender must stop sending messages to you at that number. To stop all services coming from a company on one Shortcode, text STOP ALL.
Who is reading the messages I send to Valvoline?
When you participate (in subscriptions, ringtone orders, voting or other messages), you are sending a message to a computer, not a real person. It is important to send the message exactly as instructed. Any comments or questions you send will not be read and may result in an unrecognized message. If you are having trouble with a service, send just the word VHELP to the short number 58720 of the service. This will give you information about where to get help.
How do Shortcodes work?
All commercial mobile services use numbers called Shortcodes (or short numbers) for addressing. In the U.S., these are usually 5 digits. They serve as the address for the service you are entering, subscribing to, or buying from. These automated services are programmed to look for specific messages, called prefixes, to determine which service on that number you want. It is important to get both the short number and the message exactly correct
Why did I receive this message? "Cannot find service you requested"
This occurs when the mobile service does not recognize the message you sent at the phone number entered. This could be due to any of the following reasons:
  • Wrong message: To use a Premium SMS service, you must send the correct code or prefix to it. You must also send ONLY what is asked for. For example, if a message says to text VOTE A, the service recognizes only VOTE A, not VOTEA, or VOTE MY DOG SPOT, or VOTE A New York.
  • Most services are looking for a code word or prefix (like VOTE or WIN) and an answer (like A, B, or C, or a name). Make sure you put a space between the code word and the answer.
  • Wrong phone number: If you send the right message to the wrong Shortcode (service phone number), the receiver will not recognize the message. Make sure you send to the correct short number.
  • You replied to a message on a Motorola phone: Some Motorola phones (and a few others) add (Re:) to replies and (For:) to forwarded messages. This becomes part of the message and confuses the computer reading it. Check your reply message. If it contains either of those things, use the message editor to delete them and send the message again.
  • The service is no longer operating. But check the items above and try sending the message again.
